Its ample square enclosure presents the Basilica of Our Lady of Fatima on the northeast top, and at the other extreme the Basilica of the Holy Trinity. In the middle of the enclosure is the Chapel of Apparitions and outside stands the Paulo VI Pastoral Center. Beginning at the south roundabout, the Way of the Cross offers a penitent ascent, in a pleasant wood that ends at the Hungarian Calvary.
This region is abundant in connections to the historical and military past, like the village of Ourém, with a walk by the medieval borough, where pontificates the castle and the Palace of Count D. Afonso. Visitors can find a palace lookalike castle in Porto de Mós, in addition to the main church of St. João Batista. The castle of Leiria is a real display of the several adaptations and reconstructions since the foundation of the country until the current romantic mark. One of the best examples of the Portuguese gothic art is the Batalha Monastery, built by order of D. João I to commemorate the victory of Aljubarrota battle.
The littoral of this region presents urban beaches in contact with Leiria’s pine wood, with emphasis on São Pedro de Moel, Olho do Samouco and Pedras Negras.
