The region of Lamego is located in Alto Douro, in a transition area between Beira and the northeast of Trás-os-Montes.
In the east, Vila Nova de Foz Côa is an already known destination for the Archaeological Park where you can appreciate petroglyphs from the Superior Palaeolithic, by appointment. Two steps from there, in Freixo de Numão, are the archaeological places of Rumansil and Prazo. In the municipality of Mêda, the long abandoned village of Marialva is a reference that remains as one magnificent space, the stone walls, churches and ancient constructions. Nearby is Longroiva, showing a towering castle that watches its main church.
In the middle of the region, a trio of municipalities is notable due to assets registration: Penedono and a beautiful castle siting on a fairy tale-like rocky outcrops, Sernacelhe and the romantic portal of St. João Batista Church, and Tarouca, displaying a medieval set of a bridge and a watch tower. Lamego is the high point in terms of historical collection, with the emblematic Sanctuary of our lady of Remédios and its monumental staircase that leads to the See, with an interesting 16th century façade, the Church of St. Mary of Almacave and the castle with the watchtower and the cistern.
